How to use the booklet
This booklet assumes only basic knowledge of standard computer techniques, such as menus, scroll bars, and saving files. If you've used any other program in Microsoft Office, that's all you need. It’s OK if you are using Excel for the first time.
You'll get a quick overview of the essentials of Excel for making decisions. Then try out the techniques in your own decision spreadsheets. The best way to learn Excel is to use it. Write some formulas and use some functions. See what they do. Try the various techniques discussed in the booklet. Then, branch out and explore the menus, toolbars and palette. Excel is not a spectator sport!
You can learn a lot by looking at decision spreadsheets that others have built. Click on the cells that are making the decisions and see what they do. At first, this may seem like a huge job. The spreadsheet may contain hundreds of cells. But, as you'll see, it may be built using only a few formulas, which have been cloned. Understand those and you have the whole thing.
This web site has several example decision spreadsheets that can be downloaded for free. These were all built using the techniques in this booklet. They range from simple to complex. Try them out, then look at the formulas and see how they work.
